About the memoir
For years, I found it easier to keep speaking in the familiar way than to face the uncertainty of changing it. The longer story is about understanding that experience and gradually becoming more comfortable with my voice.
The diary starts halfway through the story.
By the time I pressed record, I had already spent years managing conversations around my voice. The memoir goes back to those years, then follows the change beyond the last recording. It’s a memoir about my life, rather than instructions for yours.
The voice that wasn’t mine
School, puberty and the ways I learned to hide a difference I couldn’t explain.
The day I chose to change
A family event, a visible spiral and the moment silence stopped feeling safer.
The stranger in the mirror
A lower voice that worked externally but felt physically and personally alien.
Learning to belong to myself
Ordinary social moments gradually replace the idea of a single triumphant breakthrough.
